2017 Annual Meeting

The annual meeting was held at the home of Aspen Rayne Ranch and many NEWS FLASHES came out of the meeting.  We will highlight them below.  Meeting minutes are to the right.

Two board positions were up for election this year.  The Vice President and Treasurers terms were up.  The membership elected two new young voices to the ILA BOD they are:

  • Vice President: Aspen Auld
  • Treasurer: Andrea Johnson

They will be joining the remaining BOD members Nick Hauptly (President) and Kim Schechinger (Secretary).

Please help out your BOD by volunteering when you can and helping out when asked.  The association needs us all to run effectively.

Two major retirement announcements were made during the meeting.

  • Karen Miller: After 25 years working llama shows, Karen announced 2017 will be her last year as superintendent for the Heartland Llama Show as well as the Iowa State Fair Llama Show.  Anyone interested in stepping up and taking over as superintendent of either/both of these shows is encouraged to let the appropriate committee know:
    • Heartland - Heartland Show Committee (Becky Wilhite/Nick Hauptly/Sandy Auld/Steve Auld/Penny Lage/Lawton Divis/Gary DeBoom)
    • Iowa State Fair - contact any member of the Iowa Llama Association board.
  • Wendell Lee: Has announced 2017 will be his last year as the primary obstacle course designer/maintainer for the Iowa llama shows.  Todd Gerwig has been helping out the past few years as has Robert Dilley.  Wendell indicated he will donate his obstacles to the ILA after the 2017 show season is over.  Anyone interested in helping pick up this incredibly important role in the organization should contact the ILA board.

ILA Obstacle Trailer

With the announcement of Wendell's retirement at the end of 2017, the subject of a unified placed to store ILA obstacles was again addressed.  The membership agreed the need for an ILA obstacle trailer was justified and a lead on a suitable trailer was discussed.  Some possible funding assitance was also discussed.  The membership voted a trailer should be purchased.  The ILA BOD will pursue some funding assistance from the Heartland Llama Show Committee.  More to come.

Statewide Youth Show
Efforts are underway to reboot the Statewide Iowa Youth Llama Show! Andrea Johnson and Steve Auld are researching venues, costs and dates to bring back this fantastic and fun event.  Still hoping to get something on the books for 2017, so stay tuned.  Anyone wishing to volunteer to revive this much needed youth event is encouraged to contact Andrea or Steve.

This was a wonderful event, usually held in mid-June, and an opportunity for many 4-H youth to show their llamas in preparation for, and not JUST at, their county fair. It is also a great opportunity for many llama youth in the region to get together, meet new youth who share their llama passion and become llama friends.

2017 Heartland Llama Show: The show will be taking place on Saturday and Sunday, April 29th & 30th, 2017.  The show is set up in the ILR-SD's Show Manager and entries are open.  You can find the forms on the Events page of this web site.

2017 Iowa State Fair Llama Show

The Iowa State Fair Board decided to hold a national cattle show in conjunction with the Iowa State Fair.  Therefore, they are relocating the llama stalls to the west end of the sheep barn for 2017.  Saturday's activities will take place in the Outdoor Arena ring as they have for the last several years.   Sunday's activities will take place in the Exhibition Center.

2017 Iowa Llama Royalty: Applications are being accepted for the 2017 version of the Iowa Llama Royalty through March 31st.  You can find the application form in the documents list to the right or on the Youth page of this site.

2017 Iowa Llama Scholarship: The deadline is fast approaching for the Iowa Llama Association Scholarship.  Each year the ILA hands out 1 or more scholarships to graduating high school seniors.  The amount and number of awards is dependent on the available funds of the ILA Scholarship fund.  The awards themselves are paid out AFTER completion of the student's first semester.  Applications must be postmarked by April 15th.  You can find the application form in the documents list to the right or on the Youth page of this site.
